PHONICS AT WESTLANDS
At Westlands, we use the Sounds-Write reading programme. The Sounds-Write approach is based on the sounds in speech, and is a linguistic based phonics programme focusing on the simultaneous development of graphemic and phonic awareness.
Children begin the programme in their first term at Westlands and at the end of Year 1, they are screened to assess how well they are doing and the results are then published. Children not meeting the standard in phonics at the end of Year 1 are re-screened at the end of Year 2.
We introduced the Sounds-Write programme in the Spring Term in 2018 and we are now seeing the impact in our results.
