PHONICS AT WESTLANDS
At Westlands, we use the Sounds-Write reading programme. The Sounds-Write approach is based on the sounds in speech, and is a linguistic based phonics programme focusing on the simultaneous development of graphemic and phonic awareness.
Children begin the programme in their first term at Westlands; at the end of Year 1 they are screened to assess how well they are doing and the results are then published. Children not meeting the standard in phonics at the end of Year 1 are re-screened at the end of Year 2.
We introduced the Sounds-Write programme in the Spring Term in 2018 and have seen great impact in our results.
